Carnot, Lazare Hippolyte

   political figure
   Born in saint-omer, Lazare Hippolyte Carnot was the son of General lazare-nicolas-marguerite carnot, with whom he went into exile in 1816, when the latter was condemned as a regicide. Returning to France (1823), Hippolyte for a time was a follower of saint-simon, but then broke with the movement. After having taken part in the Revolution of July 1830, he was elected deputy for paris (1839-49) and supported the republic after the Revolution of February 1848. At that time, he was named minister of public instruction (1848). Elected again in 1850 and 1857, he refused to take the oath and thus could not sit in the legislature. A member of the Legislative Body in 1864, republican deputy in the National Assembly (1871), Carnot became a senator in 1875.
